Hydrocarbon Tank Cleaning
Hasten Cleanse – Hydrocarbon Tank Cleaning
Tank Types We Clean
Hasten Cleanse is used across the full range of storage tank types found in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations:
- Crude oil storage tanks — Dissolves paraffin, asphaltenes, and BS&W sludge that accumulates at the tank bottom. Reduces cleaning time from 5+ days to under 24 hours on most tanks.
- Refined product tanks — Gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel tanks require thorough cleaning when switching products to prevent cross-contamination. Hasten Cleanse removes residue without leaving a flammable film.
- Produced water tanks — Scale, iron sulfide, and emulsified oil build up over time, reducing effective capacity. Our chemistry breaks these deposits loose for pump-out without requiring manned entry in most cases.
- Condensate tanks — Condensate leaves a thin but volatile hydrocarbon film. Hasten Cleanse suppresses vapors on contact while cleaning the tank walls, enabling safer entry for inspection.
- Skim tanks and slop tanks — Designed to capture free oil, these tanks accumulate heavy sludge layers. Hasten Cleanse liquefies the sludge so it can be pumped, not shoveled.
- Pressure vessels and bullets — NGL and LPG storage vessels require periodic cleaning and inspection. Our non-flammable chemistry is critical for these high-risk applications.
How It Works: The Cleaning Process
Every tank cleaning job is different, but the Hasten Cleanse process follows a proven methodology that has been refined across hundreds of applications on the Gulf Coast:
Step 1: Assessment and Dilution Planning
Our technical team evaluates the tank type, residue composition, volume, and access points. Based on this assessment, we recommend a dilution ratio — typically between 1:10 and 1:50 depending on the severity of the residue and the application method.
Step 2: Application
The diluted Hasten Cleanse solution is introduced to the tank via spray nozzles, circulation pumps, or direct injection. For crude oil tanks with heavy sludge, we recommend heated circulation through the tank’s existing piping to maximize contact with the residue layer. Agitation — whether mechanical, pressure washing, or thermal — significantly accelerates the cleaning process.
Step 3: Vapor Suppression and Degassing
As the chemistry contacts hydrocarbon residue, it immediately begins suppressing volatile organic compounds. LEL readings drop rapidly, often reaching safe-entry levels in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods. This eliminates the longest bottleneck in most tank cleaning operations — waiting for the tank to degas.
Step 4: Residue Removal
The surfactant action of Hasten Cleanse breaks the bond between hydrocarbons and the tank surface, lifting residue into suspension. Unlike solvents that create a flammable hydrocarbon-solvent mixture, our water-based chemistry creates a stable, non-flammable emulsion that can be safely pumped to your waste treatment system.
Step 5: Wastewater and Disposal
Because Hasten Cleanse is biodegradable and non-hazardous, the wash water is significantly easier and cheaper to treat. Operators consistently report 50% less wastewater volume compared to conventional solvent-based cleaning methods, which translates directly to lower disposal costs and simpler TCEQ and EPA compliance.
Why Operators Choose Hasten Cleanse Over Traditional Solvents
The petroleum-based solvents that have dominated tank cleaning for decades come with serious drawbacks that cost operators time, money, and safety incidents:
Fire Risk Elimination
Traditional tank cleaning solvents carry flash points between 100°F and 140°F. In a tank environment with residual hydrocarbon vapors, this creates a genuine ignition risk. Hasten Cleanse has no flash point — it is water-based and cannot ignite. We prove this in every product demonstration with an open-flame torch test directly on treated surfaces.
Faster Turnaround
The biggest cost in tank cleaning is not the chemical — it is the downtime. A crude oil tank that takes 3 to 5 days to clean with conventional solvents can often be completed in under 24 hours with Hasten Cleanse. The chemistry works faster because it attacks the hydrocarbon-surface bond directly through surfactant action, rather than slowly dissolving residue with a solvent.
Lower Disposal Costs
Solvent-based cleaning generates large volumes of hazardous wastewater that requires specialized treatment and disposal. Hasten Cleanse is non-hazardous and biodegradable, meaning your wash water is easier to treat, cheaper to dispose of, and produces less total volume — typically 50% less than solvent methods.
Simplified Compliance
Using a non-hazardous, TSCA-compliant cleaning product simplifies your environmental compliance posture. No DOT placards for shipping. No hazardous materials storage requirements. No special handling procedures for your crews. This reduces paperwork, training requirements, and regulatory exposure.
Crew Safety
Reducing VOC and BTEX exposure during tank cleaning protects your workers from both acute symptoms (dizziness, nausea) and long-term health risks (benzene-related cancers). Hasten Cleanse suppresses hydrocarbon vapors on contact, creating a measurably safer work environment during confined space operations.
